Thornton Hall Prison

Dublin, Ireland

HKR served as the architectural and lead design consultant for the preferred consortium developing the 132,000 m2 Thornton Hall Prison in Dublin.

Planned under a PPP procedure for the Irish Prison Service, the facility was designed to house 1,400 offenders (expandable to 2,200) across 9 residential units on a 140-acre site in northwest Dublin.

As one of Ireland’s largest infrastructural projects, Thornton Hall was designed for diverse populations, including adult male, female, juvenile, remand, and immigration detainees. Centralized services included healthcare, sports, faith, catering, administration, and initial assessment facilities.
