Providing new medical facilities and luxury apartments at Newton Road, Westminster
The refurbishment and extension of an existing neo-Georgian GP practice is underway to provide new medical facilities and nine luxury apartments at Newton Road, Westminster.
HKR Architects has been appointed by London Building Company and Thornsett Group to design and deliver the two-phase scheme, with the first phase of the development, comprising part of the new 10,000 sq.ft. medical centre, almost completed.
Located in a new basement and ground floor building within the car park of the site, the phasing has ensured the existing medical centre could remain fully operational while the work was carried out.
Working closely with London Building Company, the new development secures the long-term future of the GP practice on site whilst improving the quantity and quality of facilities available for the local community.
The nine luxury apartments will be located within the existing building of the former medical centre along with an extension in the form of a new mansard roof.
Kola Ojeyomi, Director of HKR Architects comments, “We are pleased to be working on this exciting development to reconfigure this Neo-Georgian building to provide nine apartments as well as creating a vital state of the art new medical centre, rated BREEAM ‘Very Good’, which is now partially complete.
“Located in the Westbourne Conservation Area, we are ensuring the new development enhances the local area. The front extension is designed in three distinct elements, a new main entrance clad in Portland stone provides a distinctive entrance feature, while a curving wall section and a glazed link are both set discreetly between the main building and front extension.”
Paul Terry from Thornsett Group said, “We are committed to maximising the value of the properties in which we build, working closely with our partners at every step of the way to ensure projects run seamlessly. This has very much been our approach here at Newton Road and have been delighted to work closely with HKR Architects to ensure that residents and staff can continue to use the surgery whilst the new practice is built.
“We are extremely proud of what we have achieved so far and look forward to working together on the next phase of the scheme.”
Green roofs to the new build element of the surgery will help the extension fit in with the surrounding garden setting. Some of the apartments also benefit from private rear gardens whilst the penthouse units will feature external terraces. There is also a small car park for residents and the GP practice to use.
